520 3    |a This report highlights the Zurich Foundation’s partnerships with select non-profit organizations involved in managing risks in ways that promote the innovative leveraging of insurance for building resilience to disaster. It addresses risks posed by climate change, resource scarcity, demographic shifts, and the lack of access to insurance and financial services. The Foundation focuses on three broad themes. First and foremost is its work on reducing poverty and vulnerability to disaster. One of the organizations that it has partnered with is Practical Action, which empowers the poor to shape the development process. They are currently working on a sustainable forests project in Peru and a household preparedness project in Bangladesh. The Foundation is also partnered with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) through the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) and the Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction. The DREF is a general fund that provides instant finances to National Societies responding to disaster situations. They are also used for proactively reducing risks and increasing preparedness. The Global Alliance for DRR focuses on lending risk management expertise to the IFRC. A second component of the Foundation’s work is mitigating impacts from growing social and environmental risks. Working closely with the Rainforest Alliance, they emphasize protecting biodiversity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of various livelihood and business practices. With another partner, the Stiftung Risiko Dialog, the Foundation has established the Zurich Risk Management Platform, which discusses risks related to climate change, rewarding innovation in adaptation and mitigation. Lastly, the promotion of research and education on insurance and financial education is the third core focus of the organization. Through its partnership with ETH Zurich, it has established a new Professorship in risk and insurance economics as part of the emerging discipline of integrative risk management (IRM). ETH Zurich focuses on higher education and research on global challenges related to climate change, the world food supply, and human health. The Zurich Foundation believes that it is through developing networks of know-how that the most progress can be made in reducing risks to the various threats facing us in the 21st century. Facilitating the exchange of expertise between itself and its partners creates the opportunity for synergetic learning and innovation. For the Foundation, its work with partners is about a shared commitment to community investment and corporate responsibility.
