520 3    |a This booklet examines the linkage between environmental conservation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the Arab region. It begins by introducing key concepts such as disaster risk, natural hazards, vulnerability (social, economic, and environmental i.e.), and capacity (pp.4-8). The document then explores how environmental degradation is related to disaster risk. In the Arab region, the major threats are rapid population increase, desertification, flash floods, droughts, sea-floor spreading, earthquakes, and food insecurity. Environmental degradation generates two major challenges in regard to disaster risks: (i) it makes it difficult to cope with natural hazards by decreasing resilience capacity, and (ii) it alters natural processes by contributing to global environmental changes (climate change i.e.) and hazard patterns (p.12). The booklet also reviews recent developments in the region in terms of political and institutional commitments to DRR. In this regard, the League of Arab Nations plays a major role in the region by promoting the integration of DRR measures into key regional policies on climate change and the environment, and also advocating for the strengthening of DRR coordination mechanisms. The second part of the document discusses several tools for implementing DRR in environmental hazard zones, with emphasis placed on a community-driven DRR approach. This section offers several recommendations in terms of conducting risk assessments, facilitating local planning, and developing people-centered early warning systems. The final chapter in the booklet discusses the importance of public awareness and education on local disaster risks. The document calls for the inclusion of local actors in the identification, prioritization, implementation and supervision of mitigation works. It also states that it is important that policy-makers recognize successful practices for national and international dissemination. And lastly, it believes that emphasis must be placed on enhancing local knowledge of disaster risks, particularly targeting children, parents, educators, and professionals for both receiving and disseminating such information.
