- Summary:
- This document summarizes proceedings of a five-day workshop held in the Philippines attended by international, national, and local organizations, communities, local government officers, academe, and NGOs. The workshop provided capacity development support to organizations and personnel engaged in citizenry-based development-oriented Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) initiatives in the Asia Pacific region. The report contains highlights from foundational and thematic presentations at the workshop, as well as the exchange of experiences in the design and implementation of DRR and CCA policies and measures. It also contains details of study visits and community dialogues where communities were able to share their various strategies to becoming resilient with workshop participants. The presentation on community initiatives covered activities such as hazard monitoring, disaster preparedness messaging, networking for safer communities, as well as advocacy for DRR and structural mitigation. The foundational presentations on the harmonization of DRR and CCA highlight the challenges posed by climate change to social development and human security. They also emphasize how integrating CCA and DRR into development planning and programing is an essential task to lessening the impact of climate change. The thematic presentations on the role of academe in harmonizing CCA and DRR emphasize the need to include climate change in teaching, research, and extension services. In the city study visits, information on incorporating DRR strategies into city development processes was presented. The participants expressed commitment to promoting the integration of CCA and DRR in their working areas. The workshop was successful in facilitating networking opportunities between critical stakeholders involved in DRR, policy advocacy, as well as the sharing and enrichment of DRR practices, learning, and innovation. Participants also stressed the importance of information dissemination and awareness-raising, as well as increased youth participation in DRR and CCA efforts. ( English )
