Caption on verso: "Property of City of Coral Gables, Florida, Catalog No., Category, Origin: Donated 1 Nov 1973 by Bob Campbell." "Coral Gable's First School House: A one room cabin built by Solomon Merrick in 1902. The cabin was used as the first school in Coral Gables. It was located on the lot adjoining the Merrick residence at 907 Coral Way. The Merrick residence at that time was a long narrow house buit of logs and hung inside with painted muslin. The school started with an enrollment of ten, which was the quota necessary to start a school in 1902. The first teacher was Miss Winifred Cobb of Tallahassee. She is shown in the picture. Three of the little girls are Merrick children, who later became Mrs. Edwin G. Bishop; Mrs. John V. Bond and Mrs. R.W. McLendon. The picture was taken by Howard R. Anderson who was also a Gables Pioneer. Later another school was a cabin located at Coral Way and Red Road, and still later another was built on the site where the Biltmore now stands. The school in this picture remained standing for several years, part of which time it was used as a packing house. It was later torn down to make place for the first residence of George E. Merrick.
