|a The Chinese Village is the most exotic of George Merrickās architecturally themed villages. Henry Killam Murphy, a scholar of Chinese architecture and a professor in the Yale-in-China program, designed the cluster of eight homes that were constructed between 1926 and 1927. Each house has glazed tile roofs, elaborate latticework on the balconies and ornate faux bamboo decoration. The strong primary colors, moon gates and upturned rafters represent details that reflect the traditional temple architecture of China. The Chinese Village is located on the east side of Highway U.S. 1 between Riviera Drive, Maggiore Street, San Sovino Avenue and Castania Avenue. |
