520 3    |a Gene Tinney interviewed by Jennifer Garcia, Andre Kirkland, and Carl Wright at Turner Tech in Miami, Florida, on February 14, 2006. This interview is part of the Turner Tech Oral History Archive, a collection of Turner Tech students' oral history interviews that grows every year. Each year, Turner Tech students utilize their technical skills learned in the school to capture local history and honor the community's pioneer citizens. Students interview, record, transcribe and reproduce the memories of Miami residents, with a focus on civil rights. Gene Tinney was born in New York City and moved to Miami, Florida in 1974. In this interview, he talks about his family background and his memory of Miami in 1970s. He also compares the social conditions of African Americans in the north with those in the south and his personal experience with discrimination based on race. Assassinations of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the 1968 riots in Liberty City are discussed.
