Summary:
Kim Sands interviewed by Angel Augustine(?) and Faith Inodero(?) at Turner Tech in Miami, Florida, on February 16, 2006. This interview is part of the Turner Tech Oral History Archive, a collection of Turner Tech students' oral history interviews that grows every year. Each year, Turner Tech students utilize their technical skills learned in the school to capture local history and honor the community's pioneer citizens. Students interview, record, transcribe and reproduce the memories of Miami residents, with a focus on civil rights. Kim Sands, former WTA pro and first African-American women's tennis coach at the University of Miami, was born and raised in Miami, Florida. In this interview, Kim Sands talks about her family background, her experience with segregation and discrimation, her memory of civil rights movement in 1960s, and her journey of becoming a professional tennis player.
