In these interview excerpts, recorded via zoom between October and December 2020, Mr. White discusses growing up in Miami, Florida in the 1950s and 1960s; being drafted into the army in 1969, a moment when Black activists were speaking out against the war in Vietnam; the social dynamics, racism, and violence he encountered during military training and as a member of a combat unit abroad; his homecoming and the realization that he was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; his post-service education and professional history as a psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Vet Center program; and the legacies of Black veterans, as well as VA and community-based programs intended to serve them.
