Oral history interview with Lucia Sanchez, conducted by Dan Royles for the Miami AIDS Memorials Project. Sanchez, a Miami-based visual artist, discusses growing up in the South Beach and Design District art scenes of the 1990s and her relationship to the memory of her uncle, artist Adolfo "Pedro" Sanchez, who died of AIDS in 1990 before she was born. She describes piecing together his life and work through family photographs, archival materials, and conversations with his friends and collaborators, including members of the Kenny Scharf and Keith Haring circle in 1980s New York. Sanchez discusses her exhibition ADOLFOLAND, in which she reproduced and reimagined her uncle's paintings, and reflects on inherited grief, family silence around sexuality and AIDS, and the role of art in preserving queer family history. The interview also touches on her research into distant relative and artist Emilio Sanchez, whose own queer life was obscured in family and published accounts.
