AIDS Scholar Interview with Eric Wat, conducted by Ted Kerr for the Miami AIDS Memorials Project scholar interview series. Wat, a writer and independent scholar based in Los Angeles, discusses his three books: The Making of Gay Asian Community: An Oral History of Pre-AIDS Los Angeles (2002), the novel Swim (2019), and Love Your Asian Body (2022). He reflects on his use of oral history as a methodology, the intergenerational transmission of LGBTQ community knowledge, and the ways in which the AIDS epidemic shaped his political identity, writing, and community work. Wat also addresses the ethics of power in oral history practice, including questions of authorship, transparency, and the relationship between scholar and narrator.
