Oral history interview with J. Carl Devine conducted by Alex Fialho for the Miami AIDS Memorials Project. Devine reflects on being diagnosed with AIDS-related complex (ARC) in 1987 and his subsequent work in HIV/AIDS community organizing in Florida. He discusses founding the People of Color AIDS Coalition, confronting stigma and discrimination, developing culturally specific services (including food and clothing banks and health and social service referrals), and collaborating with local and state institutions. Devine also describes the Banyan Tree Project, recovery and housing initiatives, grant-funded programs, and public education efforts, including contributions to the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The interview documents Black-led HIV/AIDS response efforts, long-term survival, and ongoing challenges in funding, public health, and community memory work.
