This recording features Milton S. Dillon III discussing the life and legacy of his grandfather, Roy H. Hawkins, vice president of Bessemer Properties Corporation. Dillon describes Hawkins's central role in the incorporation of Miami Shores as a village in 1932 and in the development of the Bay Point neighborhood off Biscayne Boulevard. He recounts how Hawkins was recruited by the Disney Corporation to quietly purchase land in Central Florida for what would become Walt Disney World, negotiating directly with Florida Senator Bronson on behalf of the company. Dillon also shares family memories of growing up between New Jersey and Miami Shores, annual train trips to visit his grandparents, Hawkins's skill as a fisherman and boat handler, and a story connecting Hawkins to Ernest Hemingway during World War II intelligence activities in Cuba. The interview offers insight into South Florida's mid-twentieth century real estate development, civic leadership, and the social world of Miami Shores pioneer families. The interview was conducted by John Bachay.
