Description

This second of three recordings features an interview conducted in 2000 by journalist Gaspar González with businessman and developer Stanley Whitman (1918–2017). Whitman discusses the creation and evolution of Bal Harbour Shops, an open-air luxury shopping center in Bal Harbour, Florida. He explains how he developed the concept of exclusivity in retail, curated tenant selection, and built relationships with international brands. Whitman also reflects on local governance and planning challenges, including zoning, parking, and traffic issues along Collins Avenue, 96th Street, and the Broad Causeway. The conversation offers insight into commercial development and civic life in northern Miami-Dade County during the latter half of the twentieth century.
