Oral history interview with Charlotte "Lottie" Larranaga (age 89 3/4), born Charlotte Sweeney in the family home at 620 Elizabeth Street. Larranaga describes her father, Union Army veteran Douglas Temple Sweeney, who came from New York in 1874 and ran a soda water factory with Key West's first elevator. She also describes her German-born mother's family, the Riekes, and deaths from yellow fever. She recalls graduating from the convent school in 1904, her sisters who became Sisters of the Holy Names, and youthful social life, including Friday song fests, picnics and an overnight stay at Sand Key Lighthouse, ice cream on Duval Street, and Christmas Eve dances and midnight mass. She discusses her husband's cigar business, ten years in New York, the family's loss of Indian Key, Palatka scrip, and her ornately painted dining room. PDF transcript available.
