Teacher Blanche Girtman standing in front of Boynton Beach's Poinciana School. Historical note: Black children in Boynton Beach had a school built in 1896 on Federal Highway. When segregation was imposed in 1924, the school was physically moved to the segregated area. In 1925, a new school, a Rosenwald School was built. Rosenwald Schools were built throughout the south in the early 20th century to promote education of African American children. The school was renamed "Poinciana School" in June 1954. A0013-48-018 BOY
