In this oral history interview conducted on August 7, 2023, Dr. Enid Pinkney shares her experiences growing up in Miami, Florida, and her lifelong dedication to preserving African American history and culture. Born in the Overtown neighborhood, Dr. Pinkney reflects on her family’s Bahamian heritage and the early influences that shaped her commitment to community service. She recounts her education at Booker T. Washington High School and Talladega College, as well as her experiences confronting racial segregation, both in Miami and during her time working in Chicago. Dr. Pinkney also discusses her pivotal role in historic preservation efforts, including the restoration of the Historic Hampton House in Brownsville, a significant landmark in Miami’s African American community. She emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural history and heritage and the ongoing challenges in protecting historical sites in the face of urban development. The interview provides rich insights into Dr. Pinkney’s efforts to uplift and honor the legacy of African American contributions to Miami's development, as well as the broader struggle for recognition and respect within her community. Dr. Enid Pinkney passed away in Miami on July 18, 2024 at the age of 92.
