Emmanuel George interviews Jerry Hadley on March 8, 2024 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. Jerry Hadley was born on September 4, 1949, in Dania, Florida (currently known as Dania Beach) from a family of immigrants from Cat Island, Bahamas. He discusses his family’s ancestry from Putnam County, Florida and Cat Island, Bahamas. His father worked on the construction of the Florida East Coast railroad. Jerry Hadley describes his father’s farm and land in Liberia, and attending Attucks Elementary, Collins Elementary, and Attucks High School. He graduated from Attucks High School in 1967. He attended St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York where he graduated with a degree in Accounting. He worked in New York as an accountant, accumulating experience in nonprofits and corporations. Jerry Hadley discusses how later in life he joined the Black Farmers United Organization due to his interests in liberation and his belief in the right to access and own land within the Black community.
