The FIU Commons for Justice project identifies, illustrates, and addresses racial and ethnic inequities in pre-event disaster exposures and vulnerabilities and in post-event resilience in South Florida. The project offers an open, safe, and supportive space to articulate and exchange findings, views, perspectives, and solution options, as well as a set of resources for research and teaching available to, and shared with, vulnerable neighborhoods and the broader community. While the project has focused on the historically marginalized and disfranchised communities that make up the regionâs north-south âspine of distress,â the project also works with Caribbean Basin communities and the Global Indigenous Forum to advocate respect and support for Indigenous populations and minorities worldwide. This collection of oral histories and recordings of community events was created through activities spanning 2021 â 2024, with support from the Mellon Foundation's Just Futures Initiative.
