Rabbi Herbert Baumgard was a teacher, an activist, and a loving friend and father, who founded Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, the largest Reform congregation in the Southeast. He was an inspiration not only to his friends and family, but also to the community.
Rabbi Baumgard's Shabbat and High Holy Day sermons covering a span of many decades have been made available by the Baumgard family for online access.

As a well-traveled journalist, Bernard Diederich witnessed and even participated in countless events important to Caribbean and Central American history. His papers and media collection provides invaluable sources in history, political science, international relations, and journalism pertaining to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, and Cuba.
Diederich is a New Zealand native who in 1949 docked in Haiti, where he decided to stay and publish an independent, English newspaper, the Haiti Sun. He worked as a correspondent for Time LIFE, the Associated Press, the New York Times, and the Daily Telegraph, and has written more than a dozen books, such as Papa Doc: The Truth about Haiti Today (1969), Trujillo: Death of the Goat (1978), Somoza and the Legacy of U.S. Involvement in Central America (1989) and, most recently, Seeds of Fiction: Graham Greene's Adventures in Haiti and Central America 1954-1983 (2013).

Dana A. Dorsey (1872-1940) was the first African-American millionaire in Miami. He and his wife Rebecca acquired extensive real estate holdings in the newly incorporated city and built sold and leased property to many of Miami early black residents. They developed extensive financial dealings with the founders of early Miami, among them Mary McCleod Bethune and the Brickell family.
The collection of Dana A. Dorsey is comprised of the legal and financial records of his vast real estate holdings. Mortgages, leases, rental and loans agreements represent the focus of the collection. Of special interest to researchers are those documents which detail the growth of both black and white Miami, deeds which describe in detail the properties and location of what were the newly created sub-divisions in the city. In a period of racial segregation these documents show a blurring of racial lines as exemplified by Dana Dorsey business relations with the founding families of the city.

The Guantanamo Bay Collection consists of photographs taken by Kenneth (Allegro) Shartz aka Fr. Cyril Shartz between 1994 and 1996 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he worked as an English teacher, through the World Relief Organization. The collection is composed of 433 digitized photographs that detail the daily life of the refugees. Images also include pictures of the refugees, the humanitarian workers, the detention camps, the wildlife, and the naval base.
At the peak of the economic, political and social problems in Cuba in 1994, many Cubans set out in homemade vessels in an attempt to reach the United States. These people are often referred to as the boat people or rafters. Unsure of how to handle the large migration of refugees, the American government decided to send the rafters to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Finally, in 1995, the Clinton administration decided that 23,000 Cubans would be allowed to enter the United States.

The James Nelson Goodsell Collection documents four decades of Latin American and Caribbean history. Mr. Goodsell was the Latin American correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor news organization from 1964-1985. His archival legacy includes photographs of and transcripts with regional leaders from all across the region, from South America to the Caribbean and Central America. Goodsell's widow, Rhoda Ford, donated the collection to FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center in 1996.

Mana-Zucca (born Gussie Zuckermann) was an internationally known pianist and composer. The collection was donated to FIU by Leslie Cassel, an FIU alumna and widow of Marwin Cassel. Mana-Zucca was born in New York, December 25, 1885. She was a child prodigy who, by age eight, played with the New York Symphony Orchestra. After studying with the great music teachers in New York and Europe she performed in Russia, Germany, France, Holland, and England. Her early training included voice lessons and in addition to her career as a concert pianist, she successfully starred in several musical comedies, appearing on Broadway with Clifton Webb.
The collection consists of handwritten and published scores, full original orchestration of her works, including operas and marches, records, and diaries. Much of her life is documented in an extensive collection of scrapbooks and photo albums.

Rogelio Caparros was a writer and photographer for the Cuban magazine, Bohemia. The photographs in the collection reflect Cuban life during the Revolution, in Nicaragua, Panama and a number of photos taken in New York during Caparros' tenure as a photographer for the United Nations in the early 1960s. Included are negatives, contact prints and large photographic prints.

The William Straight Collection held in the Special Collections and University Archives Department at Florida International University was the personal research of Dr. William Straight and is the result of years of comprehensive research about individuals, organizations, and topics such as Dade County doctors, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Victoria Hospital, various medical societies throughout the state of Florida, epidemics, military medicine, South Florida memoirs, and other unique and interesting memorabilia and ephemera relating to Florida doctors, history and medicine. The collection includes an extensive history of the first and founding doctors in Miami beginning in the late 1800’s.
