COLLINS AVENUE viewed from Indian Creek, showing the luxury hotels, including the Fountainebleau, Eden Roc, and Doral Hotel. Miami Beach, was originally an unsuccessful coconut plantation, and in 1907 the land was cleared for a winter tru·ck farm. Produce grown was transported to the mainland for sale. and for the early winter tourists, pioneer developer John S. Collins built a wooden causeway linking it to the mainland, this was the turning point in the history of this unique resort.
