Abstract:
Four people pose in front of the new miniature train at Virginia Key Beach Park. In the middle (dark clothing) is Athalie Range, the founding chair of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust. Mrs. Range was a civil rights activist and politician. She was the first African-American to serve on Miami's City Commission and the first woman, and African-American since Reconstruction, to head a Florida state agency. To her left is Eugenia B. Thomas, the former Vice-Chair of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust, who was also the first black president of Florida's Parent Teach Association and a lifelong advocate for children. ( en )
