General Note:
William Brooks enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States of America on Feb 19, 1862, when he was 24. He was appointed to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in Company "K", Second Artillery, 36th Regiment, NC State troops. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant Oct 10, 1862, then to Captain June 17, 1863 and given command of the "K" company which became known as "Brooks company." On March 19, 1865 Captain Brooks was wounded in the right arm and taken prisoner at The Battle of Bentonville, NC. As a POW he was transported to a Union Army Hospital. While in route he escaped, made his way home where a physician found it necessary to amputate the arm. A few weeks later the war ended. In 1888, Captain Brooks moved his family from North Carolina to Palatka, Florida. He proceeded to Dade County. In 1890 he homesteaded in an area that is now known as the Miami Shores business district. After building a home he moved his family from Palatka to Dade County. However, some of his children stayed back in Palatka. He farmed his land and in 1896 received a patent on his 160 acre homestead. The Brooks family are one of the original settlers in Biscayne Bay, as it was called then. There were no paved roads nor even a railroad.
