Notes

Abstract:
This interview with Pauline Magiste explores her experiences growing up in the Haitian diaspora, including her memories of living in Sable Pond and Little Haiti in Miami, and the deep connections her family maintained with the Haitian immigrant community. Pauline discusses how her family supported Haitians arriving by boat, helping them integrate into U.S. society. She reflects on the stigma attached to being a "boat person" and shares personal stories of those her family assisted. The interview also touches on the challenges and pride associated with Haitian identity, particularly within the context of class dynamics and social perception. Pauline shares her own journey as an immigrant, becoming a nurse and professor, and offers advice to new Haitian immigrants on self-reliance and community building. The interview concludes with Pauline’s reflections on Haitian cultural pride and her hopes for the future of Haitian identity in Miami.
