Abstract:
Dominique St. Victor interviews Kelly Ann Maguire on May 12, 2022 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. Kelly Ann Maguire was born on August 23, 1967 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to parents Karen Nolan Maguire and Thomas Maguire. Kelly discusses her mother’s ancestry with origins in the British West Indies and Denmark. Her mother worked in casinos and as a waitress at the 500 Club in California. Her father’s parents immigrated to the United States from Ireland. Thomas Maguire worked as a bartender in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Kelly describes her childhood growing up in New Jersey, travelling frequently with her mother and three sisters. Kelly studied to be a physical therapist assistant at Atlantic Community College; however, she was not able to complete her degree due to a car accident. Kelly explains her involvement in community and government organizations. She served on the Public Art Committee and the Cultural Affairs Committee for the City of Pompano Beach. She currently participates in the Friends of the Library at the Northwest library branch in Pompano Beach. Kelly recounts her relationship with the Dorothy Porter Wesley family and her service on the board of the Dorothy Porter Wesley Foundation.
