Notes
Scope and Content:
Gerald K. Schwartz is an attorney and philanthropist who has lived on Miami Beach since he was one week old. He has been devoted to public service most of his adult life. He founded the Jewish Cultural Center on Miami Beach. In the late 1970s when the Dade County School Board was attempting to change the Miami Beach school boundaries, he worked with Nancy Liebman, Susan Gotlieb, Mayor Matti Bower and others to ensure that any change did not adversely affect Beach children. He established an electric shuttle bus service which ran on Miami Beach from 1996-2005 called the Electrowave. He shows the original route map, which was a low-cost means of transportation. He tells a favorite childhood story of meeting Babe Ruth, the famous baseball player, in Flamingo Park. He talks a great deal about neighborhood life centered around Flamingo Park.
