The "Change and Risk: Frontline Wisdom and Innovation in the Face of Climate Risk" panel at the Climate Change and Community Resilience Symposium explored innovative approaches to addressing the challenges posed by climate change, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and community vulnerabilities. Panelists discussed the critical role of collaboration between scientific research, local governance, and community engagement in mitigating risks and building resilience. Moderated by Erik Salna, Associate Director for Education and Outreach at the Extreme Events Institute, FIU, the panel featured Jane Gilbert, Chief Heat Officer & Director of Urban and Community Forestry at the Miami-Dade County Office of Resilience; Kevin Cunniff, Chief Sustainability Officer for The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida; Maggie Steenburg, Assistant Director for the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management; and Marbelys Garriga, PhD Candidate and Research Assistant in the Wetland Ecosystem Research Lab at FIU. Topics included the importance of equitable solutions, innovative infrastructure, and the integration of indigenous ecological knowledge into climate resilience strategies. The discussion emphasized the need for proactive approaches to disaster preparedness, community engagement, and sustainable environmental practices.
